One Sure-Fire Way to see Principals and Teachers Master Action Steps

I coach principals and teachers. Yes, I looked at data.Yes, I used that See It Say it as the coaching template. Yes, I do "in the moment" or live coaching. While those are valuable, I immediately noticed a shift in my principals and teachers practice when I began to using data that speaks. Using this protocol, gave me a new way to look at data and tie it to the highest leverage action step.Data that speaks looks at the glow and grow data. You share 3-5 grow data that speaks. Essentially, you capture what the teacher says and what students do in numbers or percentages that focus on the grow data. Then you plan a coaching session around the same data points that speak to the action step needed to grow students.Here is what it sounds like in a coaching session: Let's transition into your grow data.

  1. Within the first 10 minutes of class, 50% of students were talking after the Do Now began.

  2. After you gave a redirection for level 0, 68% of students were talking.

  3. When you said, "All eyes on me," 17/20 students were talking to a classmate.

Notice anything? What you notice is that all the data that speaks focuses on the same student behavior that needs to change [staying on task]. This helps focus the coaching session so you are not presenting data about every thing that happened in the class. And, the data is presented objectively. Sure, there are quick fixes, but this data is targeted to what the teacher and coach need to focus on for improvement.The next step is determining the highest leverage action step that you will model and practice with the teacher so that the students can meet the weekly outcome goal. In this case, it could be, "If you scan and immediately praise, then we can meet the student outcome goal of 85% of students staying on task throughout the lesson." Then you practice 5+ on the scan and praise action step until it becomes muscle memory.When I have used this protocol it has really transformed changes in the classroom the same day so that teachers can teach and students can learn. It matters how we coach. I hope this is helpful to your practice.
