The Challenges and Capabilities of Mobile Learning
Technology has revolutionized the way things are done in the world today. Smartphones technology is gaining popularity by the minute and people acquire knowledge using their mobile phones. Mobile learning is a new way of accessing information through mobile phones; anywhere, anytime, and at any given place. The use of smartphones in learning is in line, with traditional education, strategic goals and efforts have been made to understand how mobile learning complements traditional teaching and learning. Understanding technology as a socio-cultural element can increase the effectiveness of learning across a myriad of activities. It is therefore crucial that the challenges and capabilities of mobile learning are well understood and developed.
What is Mobile Learning?
Mobile learning offers a platform for an interactive learning approach. Mobile learning is the use of ubiquitous handheld, wireless, and phone networks to facilitate, enhance and access learning materials (Hashemi et al., 2011). In the corporate world, mobile learning offers an opportunity to reach workers out of their work environment or those employees who are always on the move. Additionally, during a mobile learning session in the education and training sectors, instructors get to ask questions and obtain answers from their trainees almost immediately. This is achieved by way of surveys which can be done on the phone (Knowledge center, 2021).
Mobile learning speaks and fits into the lifestyle of millennials. Millennials are tech-savvy as they have been raised and have been immersed in a digital world. Millennials are always on the move; mobile learning offers them an opportunity to access learning materials wherever they are. This reduces time and increases productivity.
Mobile learning creates a collaborative learning environment where students can contribute ideas despite their location or their (dis)ability. Tools such as zoom, and team viewers allow students to work together on assignments from different locations. Learners are committed to learning on devices and also can access information in real-time from various sources. This increases performance as many people are now learning independently.
What are the Challenges to Mobile Learning?
However, mobile learning has its downsides which include distractions and lack of internet connection, the small screen of mobiles, battery charging, and lack of proper OS (Operating System). Mobile phones are prone to a lot of distractions, especially from social media notifications and pop-ups. It calls for a great deal of self-discipline which most people lack. Besides, accessing learning materials could be an issue for people from areas with poor or no network coverage. Most of the information and learning materials are available online.
Mobile learning can be the future of education as it eliminates the distance barrier and offers interesting and long-lasting learning solutions accessible to everyone. It can also be the solution for on-the-job training and support but in the future I see it being incorporated into the various school curriculum. It provides an interactive platform, which is all-inclusive, presents an effective learning environment, and it is always there when students need it.
