What Is Professional Development & Why Is It Important to get it right?

Professional development occurs when teachers strive to better themselves in every aspect of their careers. When implemented correctly teachers not only transform their teaching practices but are encouraged to continue learning. When teachers receive training; they go above and beyond, and they motivate others around them to do the same.

PD helps focus on Learning as a continuum

To continue to grow professionally, we all must see learning as a continuum. Times are changing and research is becoming more accessible and the Internet of things allows for a broader range of people to have content at their fingertips. In our classroom and in professional development; Instructional leaders continue to support teachers with time-sensitive resources that will push teachers to reach new goals and reach new expectations. Taking advantage of the resources offered to help individuals grow; shows initiative and passion while supporting those you’ve helped along the way (Mizzel, 2010, p.5).

PD helps teachers invest in themselves

Everyone knows that professional development helps with private school accreditation and every teacher needs updated professional development hours in order to keep their credential updated There are various ways to max out of the tiered pay systems but here are the most common. Also, check out the 4 most underrated Professional Learning Opportunities to provide more options.

Ei360 Professional development options

  1. Max Out Credit hours - some teachers go the credit hour route- In looking to max out my hours instead of taking random courses I may as well get another degree, a certificate, or work towards a specialized certificate.

  2. PD everywhere- teachers find professional development anywhere and work to get their hours counted.

  3. University extension; continue working on a variety of classes that may or may not lead to a credential or certificate.

You’ll thank yourself later when you carve out quality time to further your education but also remember even if you are taking to the initiative to “work the system” to maximize your salary, remember, some schools cap out the years spent at a school making it harder for teachers who have put in the time. This makes it difficult to move schools without some special considerations for time spent at a specific location. There is so much to learn when it comes to whats best for your ongoing learning so make sure you are not making the decision on your own.

Please Double-check with school administration; make sure you will be reimbursed

While tons of resources will help you continue your education, some schools and districts have their own programs and professional development systems. Some design their programs and systems, while others use outside sources to help. Regardless, most schools look at this, although this is exciting to have so much knowledge, skills in your content area, certificate, and degrees it is heavily considered during the hiring process. To be transparent, I’ve sat and argued with various committees fighting to bring an expert teacher on staff only to be outvoted by team members who are looking at the cost factor. Many times I’ve heard, why hire teacher X for $$$ when we can hire Z for $. Also, watch out for when you spend your own money on PD, some programs may not be included in a school’s district reimbursement plans, informing your administrator is crucial so it is worth doing your homework and seeking out opportunities that will be a guaranteed reimbursement (Queens Online, 2021).

What does your school's Professional Development, Data imply?

School boards and districts understand that professional development and continuing education have a direct impact on student learning. There are several important factors to consider when identifying if teacher professional development is effective. First, is this a demand from your teachers, and are they engaged in learning? Second, once they have experienced the professional development have teachers started to implement specific strategies in their classroom as a result of their new learning. Third, is tied to the school or district goals; resources and support come with working in partnership with their focus. Last, is how can we measure the impact on student learning outcomes. A well-designed professional development provides new ideas, new learning, and a tracking system that monitors success.
