Are you a Part of the Global Revolution?
The technological world now has a mind blowing effect in the society which also includes the way education has evolved. If statistical figures are anything to go by, then it has been reported that the estimated number of people using the internet ranges from 9.5 million to about 37 million in the United States and Canada alone, and about 17% of that population being older than 16 years of age.Global learning, often referred to as “Global Citizenship” or “Global Dimension” is the interconnections between different people and diverse places, which enables these people connect better with global issues and create an understanding on the connections between their lives and the lives of others in and around the world. From all indications, we can see that global learning transcends above students alone. It encompasses anyone who is interested generally on the issues that concerns the world, and wants to try and be a solution by adding value in whatever capacity he or she can.The essence of this article is to show how the internet is being used as a major tool in education. Now a lot of people do not know this, but the internet started as a Department of Defense projected in the 1960s in select universities to help make communication more secure and attack proof. Over time, the military itself moved to its own network due to the World Wide Web’s inability to connect with the original network.Educational uses of internetFor educational purposes, the internet can be used for the following purposes:
To carry out research, assignments, term papers, reviews and assessments.
To be able to communicate with other students, teachers, lecturers, facilitators and even management.
To engage in distance/interactive learning between students, teachers and facilitators.
It serves as an assessable bank or storehouse for information at any time of the day.
It has a positive effect on people’s attitude towards learning.
It leads to all round global innovation.
The very exciting thing about using the internet for educational purpose is that it is easily assessable and comes at relatively low cost. All you have to do is to connect to the network. As Nentwich (2003) stated, “finding the right information is only one side of the core business of academics”. The other side is planning, organizing, structuring and evaluating the information gathered. In this regard, the student has the major role to play.In conclusion, most educational institutions even as low as primary level, are beginning to implement the use of the internet in learning such as video and audio streaming to educate students. All of these point to the fact that what students see is very hard to forget and they basically grow with it.Apart from institutions, even the government is keying into the idea, providing internet to its schools because they have all realized that this is the way forward for a better tomorrow.[embed]https://youtu.be/QSIPNhOiMoE[/embed]References:https://www.researchgate.net/publication/271617625_The_use_of_the_internet_for_educational_purposeshttps://www.jstor.org/stable/44428358?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contentshttps://www.slideshare.net/deand73/top-ten-internet-uses-in-educationhttp://www.globalfootprints.org/globallearning/
