What are some behaviros that actively promote student intrinsic motivation?
I use to wonder how other teachers were presenting the same content across similar grade levels and boy did it make a difference. I was always excited about the content, even if it was a subject that I was unfamiliar with but I noticed that my excitement fueled their eagerness to learn. Although, I needed coffee to sustain this excitement this was my challenge every day. So, what have I learned in my years of teaching?• Positive behavior was the most powerful predictor of students’ intrinsic motivation.• Positive emotions geared toward students while promoting self-determination consistently in class• Meaningful materials with levels of challenging, project-based challenging task supported this effort• Healthy, teacher-students relationship conversations that promote open dialogue to support student trust• Non-verbal cues and supports. (Pat on the back, thumbs up, and a whisper in student’s ear … great response to the question you just answered). From teaching the rules in the beginning of the year to identifying rocks in science, I always tried to be energetic and present the current curriculum in an enthusiastic fashion to ignite the flame of curiosity and interest. Now, when I mean current curriculum of course it was changed… just a little. Dan Pink does a exceptional job discussing intrinsic motivation, this is a must watch video.[embed]https://youtu.be/rrkrvAUbU9Y[/embed]
